The story
The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, considered among the holiest places for Shaivites. Its unique architecture is carved from black basalt stone. The current temple was reconstructed by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the mid-18th century. The temple houses three lingams representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, distinguishing it from other Jyotirlinga sites which typically feature only Shiva. The holy Godavari River originates near Trimbakeshwar, adding to its spiritual significance. Pilgrims often visit for darshan and to perform various religious rites, especially during Maha Shivaratri and other auspicious occasions.
History notes
The site has been a place of worship for centuries, with evidence suggesting earlier temple structures. The current temple's construction under the Maratha Empire reflects the architectural style prevalent during that era. It remains a significant pilgrimage site in India.
