The story
The temple complex is situated at Kavlem and features a distinctive architectural style. The main temple is surrounded by a pond and has a multi-storied tower, or shikhara, above the sanctum. Visitors can observe the traditional Goan temple architecture, which includes a domed canopy and intricate carvings. Inside the temple, the idol of Goddess Shantadurga is housed in the central shrine. The deity is depicted in a serene form, mediating between Vishnu and Shiva. The temple is a significant site for devotees and offers a glimpse into local religious practices. The surrounding area around the temple is generally calm and provides a contrast to more bustling Goan locations, allowing for a more reflective visit.
History notes
The original temple at Quelossim was destroyed during the Portuguese Inquisition. The current temple was rebuilt in 1730 at Kavlem by Maratha ruler Shahu I of Kolhapur and consecrated in 1738.
