Golconda Fort was originally a mud fort under the Kakatiyas. It was later developed into a formidable citadel by the Bahmani Sultans and then extensively fortified by the Qutb Shahi dynasty, becoming their capital. The fort complex features palaces, temples, mosques, and an elaborate system for water supply. The fort is renowned for its acoustics: a clap at the entrance can be heard at the 'Bala Hissar' pavilion, nearly a kilometer away. This feature served as a warning system against intruders. The fort's strategic location on a granite hill provided a natural defense. Visitors can explore the fort's various levels, enjoy panoramic views of Hyderabad from the top, and examine the intricate architecture that reflects Persian, Afghan, and Indian building styles.
The Qutb Shahi dynasty ruled Golconda from 1518 to 1687, expanding and embellishing the fort. It was eventually besieged and captured by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, leading to the decline of the Qutb Shahi kingdom. The fort is also historically linked to the discovery of some of the world's most famous diamonds, including the Koh-i-Noor.
