The story
The Charminar is a square structure with each side measuring 20 meters, and four grand arches facing the cardinal directions. These arches open into four streets. At each corner stands a minaret, rising to a height of 56 meters, each with a double balcony. The structure is made of granite and lime mortar. The monument's upper floor houses a mosque, accessible via 149 winding steps. The architecture incorporates elements of Indo-Islamic style, featuring intricate stucco ornamentation. Surrounding Charminar is a bustling market, known as Laad Bazaar, famous for its bangles, and the Makkah Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, located to its southwest.
History notes
The Charminar was constructed by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. While the exact reason for its construction is debated, it is widely believed to commemorate the eradication of a plague in the city. It was built at the intersection of the historic trade routes that connected the city to its markets.
